Intego Review 2026: The Best Antivirus for Mac?

The idea that Macs don’t get viruses is outdated. Mac-targeted malware — adware, spyware, trojans, and increasingly ransomware — has grown significantly. Apple’s built-in protections (XProtect, Gatekeeper, Notarisation) provide a baseline, but they’re not a complete solution and they lag behind the threat landscape.

Intego has been making Mac security software since 1997. That focus matters — this is not a Windows product ported to macOS.

What Intego Does Well

Built for Mac, Not Ported to Mac

This is the core differentiator. Most antivirus products — Bitdefender, Norton, McAfee — have Mac versions, but they’re adaptations of Windows software. Intego’s protection was built for macOS from the start.

In practice this means better system integration, and detection tuned to Mac-specific malware.

Real-Time Antivirus

Every plan includes real-time antivirus built for macOS. It removes viruses, malware, spyware and adware, runs quick or scheduled scans, and keeps its security definitions updated automatically.

Firewall (Advanced and Complete)

The Advanced and Complete plans add a firewall that monitors network connections, blocks unwanted access and lets you create custom rules for specific apps. It isn’t in Essential. For a business Mac or anyone handling sensitive data, it’s the main reason to step up from Essential.

SmartClean (Advanced and Complete)

SmartClean clears junk files, caches, leftovers and temporary clutter, fully uninstalls apps along with hidden files, and analyses storage. It’s a nice extra rather than a reason to buy.

VPN (Complete only)

Complete adds a VPN with one-click connect and a no-logs policy. It’s also the only plan that covers an iPhone as well as your Mac. If you only want a VPN, a dedicated service is usually better value (see our VPN reviews).

Intego Plans and Pricing

Intego replaced its older X9 bundles with three plans called Intego ONE. Prices below are first-year, for one Mac, as shown on Intego’s UK site in October 2026. Intego shows amounts before VAT, and its discounts change often.

Plans can cover 3 or 5 devices at higher prices. Two-year options are also available at a lower monthly cost.

For most people, Essential is enough. Choose Advanced if you want the firewall, and Complete if you also want a VPN or iPhone cover. Renewal prices are noticeably higher than first-year prices, so check them before you sign up.

Where Intego Falls Short

Mac Only

Intego is built for Apple devices, and the iPhone cover only comes with Complete. If you have Windows machines in the household or business, you’ll need a separate product for those. For mixed environments, Bitdefender covers both platforms under one subscription.

No Free Tier

There’s no free version. Intego offers a 30-day money-back guarantee instead, and a subscription is required. The pricing is reasonable, but there’s no freemium option.

Web Protection Could Be Stronger

Intego’s web protection (anti-phishing, malicious URL blocking) is functional but not best-in-class. Bitdefender and Malwarebytes score higher on web threat detection in some independent tests. It’s not a dealbreaker, but worth knowing.

VPN Only on Top Plan

Intego includes a VPN, but only on the Complete plan. If you want both Mac security and a VPN, you’re either paying for Complete or using a separate VPN service.

Intego vs Bitdefender for Mac

If you only have Macs: Intego. If you have a mix of Windows and Mac: Bitdefender covers everything under one licence.

Verdict

If you have Macs and care about doing security properly, Intego is the right tool. The macOS-native approach is the main draw, and the plan structure is simple now. For Mac-only households and businesses, it’s the recommendation over every Windows-first alternative.
